Silver Falls board earmarks $250,000 from 2023–24 fund balance to address staffing

The Silver Falls School District 4J board approved using $250,000 of an improved 2023–24 ending fund balance to address what district leaders described as “critical staffing needs.” Interim Director of Finance Kim Doud told the board that recent adjustments to the district’s year-end numbers produced a positive swing.
“These changes result in an increase of nearly $300,000 to our 2023-24 ending fund balance,” Interim Director of Finance Kim Doud said, and staff proposed directing $250,000 of that increase toward urgent positions. Interim Superintendent Kim Kellison reiterated the recommendation and said district administrators are monitoring spending daily to avoid overspending.
The allocation was discussed during the financial and superintendent reports and reflected the board’s announced priorities to stabilize staffing after operational challenges reported by building principals and staff. The motion to proceed with the budget allocation was carried through as part of the fiscal items presented to the board at the Sept. 9 meeting.
Board members asked clarifying questions about grants, timing and enrollment impacts; Doud said some Special Revenue Funds show negative balances due to timing and grant fiscal-year mismatches and that the district expects final enrollment figures after the 10-day drop.
