Sheriff Heit: 60 firearms seized in June; marine unit expands and FLOCK camera helped solve theft

Sheriff Tony Heit reported to the Berrien County Administration Committee on July 16 that deputies seized 60 firearms in June, nine of which were confirmed stolen, and that the department currently has one open Animal Control position. Undersheriff Sanders provided enforcement statistics and both officials outlined staffing and training developments for the Marine Division.
Heit said the Marine Division has added several new hires and increased training to support on-water enforcement and safety. The department also described delays in obtaining computer-forensics expert testimony and said it is training an internal staff member to address those evidence-handling needs. Heit reported deputies covered fireworks displays in three communities and at the Red Bud Track n Trail event without incident.
Sheriff Heit told the committee the department deployed a FLOCK camera/trailer at Silver Beach and used footage from that unit to solve a credit-card-theft investigation; he also noted recurring sand build-up around the unit that will require it to be moved frequently. The unit was additionally used to support public safety at a Bridgman street dance.
The committee approved a separate resolution authorizing the sheriff to apply for a Snowmobile Law Enforcement Grant (see related actions). The department said it will continue internal training on computer forensics and follow up on staffing for Animal Control.
