Centerville to pursue mediation with Volunteer Fire Department amid camera dispute

The Centerville City Council voted to proceed with a mediation meeting between the city and the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department to address outstanding concerns, including security cameras the department has placed on and around City Hall. Mayor Bobby Walters suggested the two parties share the cost of mediation and council member Rebecca Smith moved that each organization compose an outline of concerns prior to mediation; the motion carried 3 ayes, 0 noes, 1 absent and 1 abstained.
Council took no formal action on the audio/video cameras during the July 8 meeting. Council member Colton T. Adams provided a written statement defending the cameras, saying they "are there for one purpose, to protect the fire station, the firefighters, and the emergency equipment" and that footage is used by the Leon County Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office in criminal investigations. Adams urged the council to "put this issue to rest" so both organizations can focus on serving the community.
