Shelby County to raise motor-vehicle mail renewal fee to $3 starting Jan. 1, 2027

The Shelby County Commission approved Resolution 2026-07-27-07 to increase the Mail Order Fee for motor-vehicle license renewals processed by mail to Three Dollars ($3.00), effective Jan. 1, 2027. The resolution notes that the United States Postal Service first-class postage for a one-ounce letter has risen from $0.20 in 1983 to $0.82 in July 2026 and that other mailing costs (envelopes, printing, software) have increased as well.
Commissioner Lindsey Allison moved to approve the fee increase; Commissioner Robbie Hayes seconded and the motion carried unanimously. County staff materials in the record show an historical per-unit license mail expense average of $2.23 for 2017–2025 and a projected 2026–2032 average of $3.61, which the commission cited when setting the new $3.00 fee.
