New elementary to replace Motley and Lawrence clears schematic design; $61.4M GMP estimated

The Mesquite Independent School District Board approved the schematic design for a new elementary school that will replace Motley and Lawrence campuses.
Graham Bowman of WRA Architects and his team described a community-hub design with separate learning communities for upper and lower grades, two secure playgrounds, multiple drop-off lanes and a dedicated bus lane. "We're planning to issue this project in September of this year, start construction around the end of the year, and be complete with a new facility, at the end of summer 2028," the lead architect said. The presentation listed an estimated GMP of $61,400,000 and total project costs of $68,000,000.
Board members asked about flooding at Motley and traffic control for parent pickup; WRA said it is coordinating detention and a traffic study with the city and planning multiple on-site drop-off options to reduce roadside stopping. The design was approved by motion (moved by Mr. Everett, seconded by Mr. Bingham) and adopted by voice vote.
Next steps include finalizing construction documents, coordinating the land swap with the city to convert the Lawrence site to parkland after project completion, and issuing the project for procurement later in the year.
