The board approved updates to policy FNCE and corresponding student handbook language to implement a statewide prohibition on personal communication device use during the school day (defined as bell-to-bell). The presenter described the district's approach to consequences, exceptions and communications with families, and trustees approved the revision by unanimous vote.
During discussion the presenter explained the district would levy a $15 fee for violations and maintain exceptions for students with an IEP, a 504 plan or a medical directive. "The consequences that we have is a $15 violation that is consistent with what we've done in years past," the presenter said, adding that the district chose that measure rather than extended confiscation periods in order to avoid safety and family-access problems. The policy will be implemented by campus staff and communicated to families via a one-page flyer and the updated handbook.
