Monte Rio board authorizes Sonoma Land Trust to seek grant for Sweetwater Springs pre-acquisition work

The Monte Rio Recreation & Park District board on Oct. 14 authorized Sonoma Land Trust to submit a Wildlife Conservation Board grant application to pay pre-acquisition expenses related to the adjacent Sweetwater Springs property.
Planning Manager Steve Ehret of Sonoma County Regional Parks introduced John McCaull and Shanti Edwards of Sonoma Land Trust and outlined how the regional park property aligns with the acquisition. The grant is intended to cover Phase I environmental assessment, a boundary survey, legal support and a cultural resource study; the draft proposal was to be provided to the board by Wednesday, Oct. 16 and the application was due Friday, Oct. 18.
Director David Gatlin moved to authorize Sonoma Land Trust to submit the application; Allison Baumhefner seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Board Chair Steve Baxman and Administrator Marina McTaggart were present for the vote.
The decision authorizes the nonprofit partner to pursue pre-acquisition funding only; the board did not approve acquisition funding or a final property transfer at the meeting. Sonoma Land Trust and county parks staff said they would continue coordination with MRRPD and provide updates to the board as the grant process proceeds.
