Brenham ISD finance staff presented the district's certified 2026 property values and preliminary tax-rate math, reporting a combined certified value from Washington and Austin county appraisal districts of $5,313,000,008.51 and a maintenance-and-operations compressed rate (MCR) of 0.5890.
"The official number that goes to TEA for certified property values is that $5,313,000,008.51," Daryl Sinclair said. He explained that because certified values were slightly higher than his prior estimate, the compressed M&O rate decreased by about 1.7–1.8 cents from an earlier projection.
Sinclair said adding the district's eight 'golden pennies' would produce a likely M&O rate of 0.6690 (66.90¢) and that the board previously set a proposed rate at 70¢ for the newspaper notice. A trustee asked staff to compile comparative data showing how Brenham ISD's tax rate, including golden pennies, compares with similarly sized districts or statewide percentiles; Sinclair agreed to do that and return with the analysis at the next meeting.
The board will consider the official tax-rate adoption and budget approvals at upcoming meetings after staff runs the comparative analysis and finalizes calculations required by TEA.
