Parking Authority rep urges Fort Lee to consider local congestion-infrastructure tax

Hernani Goncalves, representing the Fort Lee Parking Authority, told the Mayor and Council that the borough has experienced ongoing traffic problems since New York implemented congestion pricing and proposed a local congestion and infrastructure use tax.
"He is proposing Fort Lee, and the Parking Authority establish local congestion and infrastructure use tax on all vehicles using bridge adjacent corridors either entering and/or exiting New York State," Goncalves said during the work session. The proposal would apply to vehicles using the bridge-adjacent corridors that affect Fort Lee traffic, he said; council members agreed only to review the matter and consider placing related resolutions on the Jan. 15 agenda for formal action.
The discussion did not include draft ordinance language, a proposed rate, revenue estimates or an implementation timeline. Council asked that the Parking Authority and staff prepare formal recommendations for the next meeting so the governing body can evaluate legal authority, enforcement logistics and potential impacts on local residents and commuters.
