Acushnet drafts recommendations to MassDOT on South Main Street acceptance; crosswalk and lane-width requests included

At the Aug. 5 meeting the Acushnet Board of Selectmen reviewed prior meetings with MassDOT concerning potential town acceptance of South Main Street and agreed to send a preliminary letter with several recommendations.
Chair said the town requested a minimum travel-lane width (he suggested 12 feet where feasible) and asked that MassDOT avoid taking property through eminent-domain as they refine plans. Board members specifically recommended crosswalks at side streets and a crosswalk near the Council on Aging; one member suggested crosswalks "south of the Century House" and others asked that staff propose three initial crosswalk locations for MassDOT to consider. The board emphasized pedestrian safety and requested that the town planner and police provide input before finalizing the letter.
Selectmen voted to authorize the chair and staff to send the letter to MassDOT after incorporating the board’s edits. The board noted any final road acceptance would still require town‑meeting approval and resident input when a formal acceptance warrant article is prepared.
