At their Aug. 5 meeting the Acushnet Board of Selectmen approved several water and sewer abatements and clarified accounting follow-up for disputed payments.
For a bill dated April 27, 2026 showing zero usage, the board agreed the fixed charges warranted abating $93.55 and waived related late fees. A resident identified in the record as Mr. Gazzara described wintering in Florida and showed documentation tied to zero usage; the board agreed to abate late fees and asked accounting to reconcile his payment so he could obtain needed building permits. "So on this bill here, mister Guzzard, you had a payment 25," the Chair noted while directing the billing clerk to reconcile payments.
The board also addressed another case linked to Slocum Street construction, moved to abate $650.63 in related charges based on a calculated average usage for the period, and approved a $38.55 abatement (and waiver) for a Mendel Road account because the meter showed zero usage. Conversely, the board denied abatement for one account at 12 Brookside Drive after confirming 200 cubic feet of usage and citing the town policy minimum quarterly usage of 500 cubic feet.
Selectmen instructed staff to have accounting issue corrected bills, carry credits forward where applicable, and to present any unresolved accounting reconciliations to the billing clerk for final adjustment.
