Board discusses a veterans property-tax exemption and next steps for a public vote
Summary
The board discussed adopting a veterans property-tax exemption (state standard 15%); Hayden said the district must set a local maximum and that there is no reliable local data on how many veterans would apply, meaning fiscal impact is uncertain and a public hearing likely will be required.

Board members discussed proposals for a veterans property-tax exemption and what adopting the exemption would require procedurally and fiscally.
Hayden summarized the state framework and local choices: "With the veteran's exemption, the typical amount is 15% property tax exemption to a maximum amount," and noted the board must set the local maximum (for example, the board could cap the exemption at $2,000 even if the statutory 15% would calculate to a higher amount). Hayden warned there is little local data on how many veterans would apply, saying administrators would be creating that data if the board proceeded.
Board members agreed any adoption would require a public hearing and explained timing considerations: to affect the coming year's tax bills the board would need to choose a maximum by March to allow time for public notice, application processing and county factoring into tax bills. Hayden suggested the board might put the question to a public vote rather than unilaterally adopt the exemption.
No motion to adopt the exemption was made at the meeting; the discussion closed with staff directions to prepare necessary steps if the board wants to put the exemption up to a public vote or a formal hearing.
