Board to place $15,000 three-library funding proposition on May 19 ballot

The Boquet Valley Central School District heard a request to place a library funding proposition on the May 19 budget ballot that would increase total library appropriations from $40,500 to $55,500.
"Shall the board of education of the Bow Pipe Valley Central School District as pursuant to education law 2 5 9 be authorized to levy and collect an increase of $15,000 in library funding separate from the school budget," the board read aloud when presenting the written proposition and its allocation. The $15,000 would be divided equally among the Elizabethtown Library Association, the Westport Library Association and the Wadhams Free Library Association, library representatives said. The presenters estimated the change would cost a homeowner about $7 per $100,000 of assessed value.
Board members asked library representatives about student use, interlibrary loans and specific programming. Erin McKinley, introduced by the board as representing the Wadhams Free Library Association, said the libraries run tutoring, game nights and lecture series and that children use the libraries regularly. The libraries confirmed they participate in a regional interlibrary system across Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties.
The board confirmed it would put the proposition on the May 19 ballot but will prepare and vote on the formal resolution at the next board meeting; the board did not take a formal vote on the proposition at this session. Library representatives said they will provide informational flyers and staff the district's budget hearing to answer voters' questions.
