Friends group says visitor center plans near Nathan Ellis Highway advance pending town agreement

Glenn Davis, co‑president of the Friends of the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge, briefed the commission on progress toward establishing a visitor center. Davis said the Friends are close to signing an agreement with the town manager that may be structured as a license or lease for a site at 475 Nathan Ellis Highway. "I'm Glenn Davis, co president of the Friends of the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge," he said when introducing the update.
Davis told commissioners the Friends received Community Preservation Committee (CPC) funding approval for a greenhouse and raised beds that will appear on the fall town meeting warrant but is contingent on a signed town agreement. They plan a site plan and engineering from Capen Island and will return to the commission to review plans before any work; they also proposed a working group including the recreation department, a town manager/select board representative and a commission designee. The Friends asked the commission to designate a representative to the working group after the town agreement is finalized; the presenters said they expect the agreement to be completed before the fall town meeting.
