DC Greens asks council to convert ProduceRx to multiyear grant to ensure stability

DC Greens told the Committee on Health that ProduceRx — a produce prescription program serving Medicaid and Alliance patients — works well under DHCF oversight and should become a multiyear grant to reduce administrative burdens and improve reach.
Eric Angel, executive director of DC Greens, testified that the ProduceRx program has delivered nutrition support to qualifying households and asked DHCF and the Council to convert the program to a multiyear grant to reduce annual administrative burdens.
"Given the successful oversight of the program, we would request that this be converted into a multiyear grant in the years to come," Angel said, describing how the program sends a debit card loaded with $80–$120 a month to qualifying households and supported roughly $1,000,000 in benefits to about 1,000 households at its peak. He also urged pursuing a Section 1115 Medicaid waiver to allow Medicaid funding to support produce prescriptions in the future.
Chair Henderson acknowledged that DHCF had not yet awarded some grants (including ProduceRx) and asked staff to follow up on award timelines.
