The Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved canvassing the Nov. 5, 2024 election results at a special meeting on Nov. 19, formally certifying winners for four at-large positions.
Judge Humberto Enriquez administered the oath of office for newly elected trustees during the regular meeting that followed, and the board accepted a declination of office by one winner, which created an open seat. District counsel Steve Blanco explained the board’s options: hold a costly special election (estimated at $60,000–$90,000) or appoint a replacement. Trustees debated past practice and transparency before voting.
After several failed motions, the board passed a motion to appoint the next person in line from the election tally, Sergio Martinez, in a 4–2 roll call (Barnes–Yes, Borrego–No, Maldonado–Yes, Ortega–Yes, Rodriguez–Yes, Zuniga–Yes). The appointee must accept the position; the appointment will be finalized at the board’s December meeting.
