Residents press police over response and documentation after attempted Brightwaters break-in

Southwark County police briefed the Brightwaters board that the village saw three arrests in the last month and described a stolen-vehicle pursuit that ended in Brightwaters. The officer said the incidents were isolated and not part of a recurring pattern.
At least one resident told the meeting she had called 911 after people tried to force their way into a home on the night of Dec. 7 and said police took information at the scene but did not later notify the homeowner. "I was told that we don't arrest psych patients," she said, asking why officers did not make arrests for an attempted break-in and why the victim received no follow-up. Police replied that some individuals met criteria for mental-health transport and described procedures (including PEP at Stony Brook) that can result in patients being taken for services rather than arrested.
Board members and police encouraged residents to request an incident or complaint number when reporting crimes so the village can track trends and support follow-up. The officer offered to have precinct community-affairs staff reach out to the resident who raised the Dec. 7 incident. The board did not take further formal action at the meeting but directed staff to help ensure residents can obtain report numbers and to ask the precinct to contact the complainant.
