Brightwaters moves to retired-officer overnight security; residents press for clarity on duties

Brightwaters trustees said the village has shifted overnight coverage to a contracted security firm that employs retired police officers and will cover the 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. shift.
At the meeting, longtime overnight attendant John Marr asked for details: "What is the security company supposed to do?" The Chair replied the firm will be proactive, provide daily reports and GPS tracking of patrols, and focus on code violations such as overnight parking while acting as a deterrent presence.
Residents pressed for clarity about whether the firm can cite or ticket offenders and how its activity compares with the previous overnight coverage. The board said the contracted staff will use village codes for enforcement of parking and code violations, will provide reports of contacts each night and that the trial period will determine effectiveness, with the option to revert if standards are not met.
Trustees asked residents to meet with the company and board staff if they have operational questions; the board also said it will monitor reports and revisit the arrangement in several months.
