Flatonia ISD approves purchase of two new school buses totaling about $297,567

The Flatonia ISD Board of Trustees voted to purchase two new school buses and to amend the budget to finance the acquisitions.
Dan Sullivan moved that the board approve “1 new 77 passenger bus from Longhorn Bus Sales in the amount of a $154,567, and 1 new 57 passenger bus from Thomas Built buses in the amount of $143,000,” and the motion passed unanimously after a second and a voice vote. Board officials said the district issued an RFP and received bids from an International/Longhorn dealer and from Thomas Built; staff recommended one of each model to meet routing needs on tight back roads.
District staff explained the recommendation was based on availability and route geometry: the 57-passenger Thomas bus can be delivered more quickly and is easier to maneuver on narrow roads, while the larger Longhorn/International 77-passenger model met capacity needs for certain routes. Following the purchase vote, the board approved an accompanying budget amendment of $235,000 to cover lease and remaining payment costs for the bus purchases.
The board’s motion and the recorded dollar amounts were read into the record during the meeting. The purchases were approved as part of the board’s action items for the evening and staff will proceed with the vendor contracts and delivery scheduling.
