Board hears gains in kindergarten reading as new program expands

"Seeing that rise, I think it adds a lot to a great teaching a group of teachers in that kindergarten level," Presenter (S3) said, citing recent improvements in the percentage of students reading at grade level after kindergarten. The presenter reported kindergarten rates climbed from a dip to roughly the high 40s earlier to about 70% in the most recent cohort projections.
Officials cautioned that cohort timing, transient enrollment and differences in early kindergarten participation affect year-to-year comparisons. The presenter offered to provide class-level breakdowns to board members who requested more detail.
