Goose Creek CISD adopts $1.0725 ad valorem tax rate after higher proposal fails

The Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees debated and ultimately adopted an ad valorem tax rate for fiscal year 2024-2025 during a special meeting Oct. 21, 2024.
Trustee Tiffany Guy moved and Trustee Richard Clem seconded a motion to fix and levy a maintenance and operations rate of $0.7575 per $100 valuation and a debt service rate of $0.3250 per $100 valuation for a total rate of $1.0825. That motion failed on a 4-2 vote: Trustees Helen Berrott-Tims, Tiffany Guy, Jessie Martinez and Richard Clem voted for the motion; Trustees James "Jim" Campisi and Mercedes Renteria voted against it.
After the failed motion Trustee James "Jim" Campisi moved and Trustee Richard Clem seconded a second motion to set the maintenance and operations rate at $0.7475 per $100 valuation and the debt service rate at $0.3250 per $100 valuation, for a total rate of $1.0725 for the 2024-2025 budget year. The second motion passed 5-1 with Trustee Mercedes Renteria, III voting against.
A member of the public, Chuck Crews, addressed the board during Citizens Participation and expressed his support for the tax increase being presented that evening.
