Steger fire and police chiefs report May activity; fire department offers free smoke-detector installations

Fire Chief Mike Long told trustees the Steger Fire Department responded to 169 calls in May — 130 medical responses, 39 fire responses and 34 mutual-aid responses to neighboring communities — and said the department passed its annual inspections.
Chief Long described a recent house fire at 3541 Hopkins where, fortunately, no injuries were reported but the department encountered a delay in alerting occupants because smoke detectors were not working. He urged residents to use the department's free smoke-detector program: "If your home does not have working smoke detectors, the Steger Fire Department can provide and install at no cost to homeowners. Contact the Fire Department for more information," Long said.
Police Chief Greg Smith reported departmental training on reporting child abuse and neglect, an officer's completion of a police-transition class and details about recent extra-patrol activities at events and graduations.
