Board approves two vape retailer licenses; trustees debate limits on outlets

The Village Board on June 2 approved two new business licenses for vape/smoke retail operations. Trustee Perchinski moved to approve a license for Up in Smoke at 3502 Chicago Rd. pending inspections; the motion passed on roll call with all trustees voting aye.
The board also approved a license for Blue Smoke at 14 E. 33rd Place after discussion. Trustee Perchinski said the applicant "has a whole business plan; I think the public will decide if this is a viable business or not." Trustee Thurmond noted that, with the new approvals, the village now has roughly 10 operating facilities selling vape products and suggested tabling further approvals until the board considers an ordinance limiting the number or regulating the sale of vape products. Mayor Joyce said the village currently has no ordinance restricting the sale of vape products and offered to schedule the matter for the next Committee of the Whole meeting for further discussion.
Votes: the Up in Smoke license passed unanimously; the Blue Smoke license passed 4–2 (Thurmond and Perchinski voted no).
