Steger board adopts 1% local grocery tax to take effect Jan. 1, 2026

Mayor William Joyce, reading details of the ordinance, said the local tax "is the 1% Grocery Tax that will take effect January 1, 2026. It will go into effect when the state's 1% Grocery Tax is removed. There will be no change in the amount of taxes charged, just the direction it's going." The board approved the ordinance by roll call; Trustees Hanus, Kaminski, Stewart, Thurmond, Trotier and Perchinski voted aye.
The mayor framed the measure as an administrative change to maintain existing tax levels locally after the state eliminates its comparable 1% grocery tax. The minutes note the village also continues to pursue infrastructure grants and other funding in parallel.
What happens next: the ordinance will take effect on Jan. 1, 2026 per the mayor's statement; the board did not record additional implementing regulations during the meeting.
