Aspen staff and consultants present ARC expansion concept with two-court gym and walking track

Scott Chisholm, the city's director of business services, introduced the recreation-facilities master-plan update and design team and said the work aims to respond to a changing demographic and a 2024 business plan. Consultant Mara Tyson (Perkins and Will) described a concept that adds a two-court gym with a perimeter walking track, expanded cardio and free-weight areas, a fitness/wellness studio, new admin offices and a welcoming main entry.
Tyson said the modeled gym addition (not including housing on the north side) is “about 46,000 square feet, a little over,” and staff emphasized that the design is at a massing/concept level only. Council members raised concerns about parking capacity at the ARC, the timing and cost of multiple concurrent capital projects, and the need for public engagement and fundraising work before any design or construction commitment.
