County VSO reports $169,000 in state veterans aid, urges legislative safeguard for fund use

"For FY2025-26, Lancaster County veterans received approximately $169,000 in Nebraska Veterans Aid," Lakamp said during the quarterly update. He urged the Board to support a legislative proposal that would require approval from the Nebraska Veterans Advisory Commission before funds are used for specific, one‑time projects benefiting veterans.
Commissioner Rick Vest backed Lakamp’s recommendation, saying reductions in state aid can shift unmet needs to counties. Lakamp also highlighted that construction on housing at the former VA hospital site is expected to begin in September; he said veterans will receive a preference but will not have exclusive access. Lakamp identified the claims consultant issue as an additional legislative priority and Chair Christa Yoakum offered to share National Association of Counties resolutions supporting federal veterans programming.
