BRENHAM ISD presents LASSO grant partnership with NIET to boost instruction

Brenham ISD officials and representatives from the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) described progress under the district———LASSO (Learning Acceleration Support Opportunity) grant, highlighting embedded coaching, leadership training and the use of high-quality instructional materials.
"Knowing that teacher quality is the single best in-school factor for student success," NIET said through presenter Jill Crossley, "the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching set a mission on building educator excellence to give all students the opportunity for success." Crossley said NIET has worked with thousands of schools and has delivered 63 days (about 504 hours) of on-site support in Brenham since June.
Chief Academic Officer Sarah Bohart and the NIET team said the partnership focuses on building district capacity rather than dependency: coaching, quarterly classroom learning walks, PLC structures, and exit-ticket analysis to improve daily instruction. They emphasized inclusion of special-education teachers in joint planning and coaching so differentiated instruction is supported across classrooms.
In response to board questions, NIET representatives said measurable progress typically takes several years and that the partnership uses TEA-required student data, learning walks, coaching logs and surveys to assess implementation. The presenters urged patience and committed to continued on-site support and data-driven review.
