The Keep Gallup Clean & Beautiful Board set a Tree Give-Away event for May and is arranging procurement of dormant trees so they can harden off before Gallup’s last frost. Elizabeth Barriga said the event was announced for Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at the Community Pantry and the FY26 budget includes roughly $4,500 to purchase about 20–35 trees for distribution.
Board and guest horticulture advisor Bud Lopez urged selecting drought-tolerant species and recommended winter watering during drought conditions. Lopez noted native piñon trees are under stress from drought and bark beetle infestations, suggested Hackberry as a resilient option and cautioned that pecans use too much water for local conditions.
