Council considers permanent Galena Street closure as part of downtown plan

Council members asked whether the closure was part of the original grant (it was not), and staff said any additional costs incurred by the change would be borne by the city if they exceed grant-eligible amounts. Presenter (S6) said the closure-related work on the Bollinger portion is estimated at roughly $2,000,000 and that anything above the $2,000,000 grant maximum would be the city's responsibility. The presenter also explained that including closure as an alternate bid option would increase design costs because it requires separate designs and drainage calculations for each bid alternate.
Council members and staff discussed parking impacts for nearby businesses and options to present multiple contract alternatives for council consideration. No final vote on the closure was taken Aug. 3; staff will return with design alternatives and cost estimates.
