Gardner City to test temporary speed cushions on Nichols and Pine streets

Staff will run a temporary 60-day test of rubberized speed cushions on Nichols Street and Pine Street this fall, collecting before-and-after speed and volume data to evaluate whether permanent cushions are warranted.
Bill said staff will deploy a temporary, rubberized version of speed cushions on two lower-volume corridors to measure short-term changes in speed and volume before recommending permanent installation. "The goal there is to get speeds down into the 20, 25 miles an hour, on these streets," he said, and described cushions designed so emergency vehicles can straddle them.
The plan calls for collecting baseline speed and traffic counts after Labor Day, installing cushions and measuring performance for up to 60 days, then removing the temporary installation and producing a before-and-after evaluation for the draft safety action plan. Staff noted Federal Highway grant rules and said the team is coordinating procurement and installation with DPW and police.
