HPISD deputy superintendent outlines ELAR focus on explicit grammar and an 'HP Canon'

"[Explicit] teaching of grammar that consists of the deliberate independent practice of skills and transfer to independent writing," Dr. Heathcote said, outlining instructional strategies that also include comprehension techniques, foundational skills and fluency practice. Trustees previously discussed a proposed 'HP Canon'—a curated set of literature for students—during board reports, noting curriculum work to ensure exposure to high-quality texts before graduation.
The presentation was informational; no curricular policy changes were adopted at the meeting. Board members signaled continued attention to implementation details and timeline as staff refine the program.
