Superintendent reports: teacher incentive assistance, billboard revenue, retirement, election filing dates and attendance decline

At the Dec. 9 meeting, Interim Superintendent Kelly Baggett presented several information items and campus reports to the board. He said Region 17 Service Center will assist the district with the Teacher Incentive Allotment application, a program that can increase teacher salaries at qualifying campuses. Baggett also reported the district receives $1,000 from a billboard company to maintain a sign on high school property and that HCISD negotiated one-year advertisement space for $1,000 to promote the district.
Baggett accepted a retirement letter from Darenda Ashby effective May 16, 2025 and noted the filing period for the May 2025 trustee general election opens Jan. 15 and closes Feb. 15, 2025; the notice was posted on the HCISD website. He said a new metal sign reading "Danny Ivy Agricultural Center" will be purchased and installed at the ag barn when completed.
Baggett presented Fall Semester 2024 attendance totals compared with Dec. 2023: High School 173 (2024) vs. 177 (2023); Carr 163 vs. 173; Akin 231 vs. 238; district total 566 vs. 588, reflecting a net decline of 22 students year-over-year. Campus principals also reported on diagnostic assessments and plans for reading, math and CTE implementation across campuses.
