An agency official with experience building birdhouses described appropriate hole sizes for local finches and cautioned against holes that are too large because predators can enter. "For most of the common finches that you see around here, the yellow finch and the other type of finches, they want a hole about anywhere from 5 eights to an inch and 0.25," the official said. Commissioners discussed contests, mounting options (pending city attorney approval) and whether participants would take houses home or the city would mount some on street poles.
