Residents and community advocates urged the Salt Lake City Council to prioritize neighborhood safety and pedestrian projects during a public hearing on the Capital Improvement Program.
Barbara Bosmajian described a proposed Median Conversion to Parklet (mayor's budget item #64 in District 6) and said the project has a projected budget of $52,000 and neighborhood support. "I gathered over 100 signatures from residents by going door to door and attending a town hall," Bosmajian said. Other speakers pushed for traffic‑calming, greenway connections and improved school crossings.
Bike Utah's community engagement manager Seth Common urged the council to fund Safe Routes improvements at a hazardous crossing near Rose Park Elementary, saying, "The primary crossing we found is at 900 West and 800 North," which has no overhead lighting or pedestrian button. Summer, who introduced herself as principal at Rose Park Elementary, told the council the project would benefit hundreds of students who cross 900 West daily.
Jeff Baer and Natalie Brooks pressed for safety improvements along 1700 South, calling the corridor dangerous and urging crosswalk infrastructure and traffic‑calming. Jim Webster and others described matching funds and community support for projects such as monumentation and traffic mitigation along 13th South California Trail.
After the speakers finished, the council thanked participants, noted budget constraints and moved to close the public hearing and defer action to a future meeting; the motion carried unanimously with six members present.
