Commission directs staff to proceed with in-place replacement for SW 63rd Court bridge

City public-works staff recommended proceeding with an in-place replacement (refurbishment) for the structurally deficient Southwest 63rd Court bridge, and the commission directed staff to move forward with design and construction action items for that option.
Public Works Director Alex Munoz said the preferred, negotiated option would allow the city to use the existing permit, shorten the construction period and extend the bridge life. "On this preferred option, the cost is 3,300,000, and, it's about, 286 calendar days, from mobilization to substantial completion," Munoz said. He contrasted that price and schedule with a previously advertised option that was priced at about $4.4 million and would take longer to build.
eXp consultant Jose Santiago summarized two raise scenarios studied for sea-level-rise and recreational clearance. He warned that raising the bridge by larger amounts (for example, 6 feet) would affect adjacent driveways and properties — "we would have to harmonize or to cure these driveways" — and could add years and costs for property mitigation and drainage work. Commissioners weighed time-to-open and resident access versus long-term geometry and permitting uncertainty; the majority favored the faster in-place refurbishment to restore service to affected neighborhoods more quickly.
Staff said following the commission direction they will return with the design and construction action items and contract documents needed to move the project into procurement and construction.
