The Monte Sereno Youth Commission reviewed a proposed community engagement project to build birdhouses (or nest-site alternatives) with support from a Cupertino nonprofit that offers local bird education. Staff reported outreach to the elementary school principal and to the nonprofit; commissioners discussed running a pilot of about 15 students at city chambers or arranging a larger school-based activity pending principal approval.
"I named this the community engagement incentive for the birdhouses building project," staff said, describing two possible tracks: a small on-site pilot at city chambers or partnering with Bas Avenue Elementary for a larger student event. Commissioners noted the ideal deployment window for birdhouses is mid-February through March and suggested scheduling a guest presentation in November, December or January to prepare for installation.
Staff committed to follow up with the nonprofit presenter and the school principal and to return with more information at the next meeting about exact timing, participant limits and budget needs. The commission favored starting small (15 participants) and emphasized an educational component with a species-appropriate nest-site design recommended by the nonprofit.
