Monterey Park awarded $6 million state grant for Barnes Park Aquatic Center; council to plan match and fundraising

City staff and community partners announced that Monterey Park received a $6,000,000 grant from the California State Parks Land and Water Conservation Fund to support the Barnes Park Aquatic Center revitalization. SGV Pub’s Margaret Leong thanked city staff and leaders and described the award as a milestone for the community.
Robert Geary, director of Recreation and Community Services, also announced the award and said it builds on prior Measure A funding. "We recently got word that we've received and be awarded the $6,000,000 from the California State Parks Land, Water, and Conservation, Fund Grant," Geary said, noting the grant will supplement other funding sources. Councilmembers and staff warned that matching funds and additional fundraising will be necessary — one councilmember estimated an additional $15 million-plus could still be needed to complete the project — and urged creating a focused campaign to secure the remaining financing and meet any grant deadlines.
Councilmembers praised staff and community volunteers for the application and outreach work but stressed the city now faces a spending clock once the formal grant agreement arrives. Staff said they will return with midyear budget recommendations and suggested forming a council subcommittee to coordinate campaign and fundraising strategies.
