Code enforcement officer urges local law to speed fines and maintenance enforcement

Chuck Miller, the town's code enforcement officer, urged the Town of Solon Board on Aug. 19 to consider a local law that would allow the town to issue fines and act more immediately on zoning and maintenance violations rather than relying on court action. Miller presented an example local law and fine schedule and cited the Village of Cayuga Heights and the City of Cortland as municipalities that use similar local laws.
Supervisor Corey LaSalle and other board members said they will review the materials and discuss the proposal at next month’s meeting. Miller told the board that pursuing a local law would require a public hearing and involvement from the town lawyer before any ordinance is adopted. The board was also informed that the town’s online permitting system is now live and that Miller provided a local quote for condemn signs for future enforcement needs.
