Staff requested purchase of a 2026 Vermeer AX17 brush chipper for the electric utility, citing frequent clutch failures and increasing maintenance costs on the 2015 unit. "Staff is requesting to purchase this 2026 a x 17 brush shipper from Vermeer, Iowa with the net cost of $72,900," Ryan said, and staff noted the replacement was included in the electric capital forecast adopted earlier this year.
Council asked about expected service life and prior repair costs; staff said repairs to the older unit cost about $5,000 each time and that the new model includes additional safety features such as a knee guard that will stop the unit if an operator is pulled toward it. The council approved the purchase by voice vote and noted the item is funded in the capital plan.
