Town of Hempstead adopts multiple local laws on parking, traffic and school zones

At its Jan. 27 meeting the Town Board unanimously closed public hearings and adopted a package of local laws amending parking, traffic control and school-zone rules across several communities, including East Atlantic Beach, West Hempstead, Merrick and Bellmore.
The Town of Hempstead Board unanimously adopted a series of local laws on Jan. 27 after public hearings produced no speakers. On motion of Councilmember Dennis Dunne, seconded by Deputy Supervisor Dorothy L. Goosby, the board closed the hearing and "Local Law No. 10-2026 ADOPTED, pursuant to Resolution No. 75-A-2026."
The package included amendments addressing parking and standing prohibitions (Local Law No. 11-2026), arterial stops in Merrick and Roosevelt (No. 12-2026), traffic regulations in the vicinity of schools in Oceanside and Woodmere (No. 13-2026), a U-turn prohibition in Merrick (No. 14-2026), a police-vehicle-only parking designation in West Hempstead (No. 15-2026), gross weight restrictions in Roosevelt (No. 16-2026), and insertion of two locations into the Town's 20-mph school speed limit section for Bellmore (No. 17-2026). Meta J. Mereday is listed on the record as the appearance for several of the parking and traffic items.
Board members recorded unanimous roll-call votes to adopt each measure. Many items were adopted under identical procedural language noting that "no one wishing to be heard on subject matter" preceded the motions to close and adopt. The board also adopted updates to the Town public parking field maps affecting Merrick (M-4 & M-8) and a townwide handicapped parking designation change (Resolution No. 84-2026). The board called additional public hearings for Feb. 10, 2026, on related parking and code changes.
