Leander ISD seeks $800,000 to replace aging underground fuel tanks at Central Transportation facility

Leander Independent School District administration presented a recommendation on Nov. 7, 2024, to reallocate $800,000 of the 2023 Bus Replacement Bond Project into the 2023 Bond Project Savings fund, to be reallocated to a new Central Transportation Facility Fuel Tank Replacement project. The presentation said the existing underground diesel and unleaded tanks are over 20 years old, have reached recommended replacement age and are currently preventing district fuel deliveries to the Central site; as a result, drivers must fuel at the North Transportation facility, increasing time and mileage.
The Bond Oversight Committee unanimously approved moving $800,000 to the savings fund to create the new tank replacement project. Presentation materials estimate the project cost at $800,000 and state the Bus Replacement project has approximately $802,667 remaining and that all currently needed bus replacements have been completed. Transportation materials also report the department has recaptured nearly $950,000 through rebates, grants and auctioning old equipment, and lists $364,000 in pending grants plus $640,000 in upcoming fuel tax rebates to further support the budget.
