Jackson County jail hit 94% occupancy in August; officials highlight housing revenue

Andrew Long, introduced by the board to give a jail update, told supervisors the facility was operating near capacity: "Currently, we're sitting at 38 inmates in jail, 30 males, 8 females," and said the jail reached a record high of 47 inmates in August and had a 94% occupancy rate that month.
Long said the county has been housing inmates from Scott County and that housing-purchase revenue was a significant offset: "Very large revenue month from Scott County this month, we brought in $50,710," bringing fiscal-year receipts to $98,045 and an overall facility running total of $258,755, with $132,660 deposited so far. Long told the board the Scott County auditor sent checks for June 25 and July 25 that were expected to arrive for deposit within the week.
Sheriff Kilberg and Long described operational strain and praised staff for handling a busy month—68 bookings in August and 3,119 meals served—while noting some incidents among transferred inmates had been addressed with Scott County. Chair Don Swinker said supervisors would schedule a work session to review budget implications as the county approaches the next budget season.
