Mercedes ISD to expand dual-enrollment math after McMurry pilot where 38 of 45 students passed

The Mercedes ISD board heard a report on dual-enrollment and CTE pathways on Aug. 20, with CTE Director Juan Garza describing the McMurry University pilot as "a huge success" and reporting that 45 students attempted the dual-enrollment math course and 38 passed.
Garza said the pilot primarily served Mercedes Early College Academy (MAA) and will be expanded to Mercedes High School and MAA students this year. Mrs. De La Fuente (Secondary Director) confirmed 15 high-school students passed the course. Garza also described ongoing CTE partnerships sending MISD students to South Texas College (TSTC) for programs such as HVAC, mechanics, machining, mechatronics and precision machining. The board approved the McMurry MOU and also approved purchase of a commercial lawnmower for the district agriculture farm used by CTE, noting Maintenance previously lent equipment for farm work.
Trustees emphasized expanding opportunities that allow students to earn college credit and industry-aligned skills; administration said it will continue to track outcomes and report back to the board.
