Board approves Character Counts training, CTE certification agreement and exam-acceleration guidelines

The board approved three curriculum-related items Sept. 17: adoption of Exam for Acceleration Guidelines, a consulting agreement with Drake University for Character Counts curriculum training (funded through the Stronger Connections grant), and an agreement with NCS Pearson/Cetriport to provide industry-based certifications for CTE students during 2024–25.
Trustee Nancy Vallejo praised students who took AP exams and asked how students were notified of opportunities; Secondary Director Angela De La Fuente said counselors and online notices are used. Federal Programs Director Mona Guerra described Character Counts as a K–12 curriculum built on six pillars—Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship—funded through the Stronger Connections grant to help target student behavior and mental-health supports. Board minutes show unanimous approval of the agreements and guidelines.
