The Mercedes ISD Board of Trustees approved revisions to the 2024–25 Student Code of Conduct at the Aug. 20 meeting, including new reporting and procedural requirements tied to state safety guidance and changes to dress-code and extracurricular policies.
Safe Schools Director Miguel Chacon told trustees the district added Sentinel reporting requirements requested by the state; the system will capture campus audits, door sweeps and behavior-threat assessment steps. District staff also included UIL absence language carried from previous policy guidance, clarifications about facial hair (allowed if "trimmed and presentable"), an expanded dress-code allowance for elementary polos of any color, and explicit references to the Crown Act to protect hairstyle expression. Chacon said the district added an extracurricular code of conduct with procedures for responding to violations promptly.
Trustees asked administrators to continue monitoring attendance processes and to coordinate with campus clerks to reduce absenteeism. The code-of-conduct updates were approved unanimously.
