Mercedes Independent School District officials held a public hearing Aug. 20 on the proposed 2024–25 budget and tax rate. Sylvia Garza, the district’s chief financial officer, presented the plan and said “the proposed tax rate for 2024-2025 would be $1.1269,” an increase from $1.0960 the previous year.
Garza told trustees that the district’s General Operating Fund revenue is projected at $53,954,768, composed of roughly $7.3 million in local revenue, $41 million in state revenue and $5.5 million in federal revenue. She said total General Operating Fund expenditures are projected at $60,112,825, with payroll costs listed at $42,802,124 and contracted services at $5,230,484. The presentation was provided for information only; the board did not vote on the budget or tax rate during the hearing.
