Council approves one-inch headstone height exception for Christensen memorial amid cemetery drought concerns
Summary
Council granted an exception to cemetery monument size limits for Clint (Clinton) Christensen's headstone — larger by approximately one inch due to a decorative guitar element — and directed staff to clarify monument rules for mortuaries and plot purchasers; members also discussed cemetery maintenance challenges from heat and limited water.

The council approved a request to allow a cemetery monument that slightly exceeds the dimensions in the cemetery regulations.
Council Member Chris Anderson explained the proposed headstone exceeded the height limit "by approximately one inch due to a decorative guitar feature included in the design," and that City policy requires Council approval for such exceptions. Council voted to approve the Clinton (Clint) Christensen monument; Anderson said staff will follow up and ensure mortuaries and purchasers are informed about the cemetery's size restrictions to avoid future noncompliance.
Council Members earlier had raised broader concerns about cemetery appearance because of drought and limited water availability. Anderson said it has been challenging to maintain the cemetery in the heat and that staff will be asked to review other monuments that may be out of compliance and report back with recommendations.
