Chair says consultant was assigned for Los Trancos safety work; committee asks to be involved

Chair Ed Holland told the committee that a near-miss incident of a student crossing on Los Trancos Road had prompted town staff to appoint a consultant to review safety at that location. "In the last week, I've learned that the assistant town manager has told this person that they're appointing a consultant to look at the area and, that this is there's no need to have a discussion any longer. This is all being handled," Holland said, and added he had written to the council requesting BPTS involvement.
Holland said he asked for clarity on the consultant's charge and cost and urged the council and town manager to involve the committee before the consultant begins work, citing prior studies that were expensive and unsatisfactory. Members asked staff to report back and to confirm the consultant's objectives and deliverables before the study is finalized.
Why it matters: the committee is the town advisory body for pedestrian and traffic safety and members said early involvement is critical to ensure the consultant's scope, methods and recommendations address local safety priorities rather than producing an untargeted or costly study.
