County engineer Dan Dahlke to retire after 34 years; Clay Phillips to step into role

The Saint Clair County Commission on May 26 ratified a framed resolution recognizing James Daniel "Dan" Dahlke for more than 34 years with the county Department of Transportation and accepted his upcoming retirement effective June 1, 2026. Chairman Stan Bateman read the resolution and commissioners presented the document to Dahlke at the meeting.
Bateman praised Dahlke’s decades of work securing grants and ensuring federal compliance, saying the engineer had helped the county qualify for federal funds and had “raised the bar” for county engineers in Alabama. Dahlke, who the resolution names in full as James Daniel Dahlke, thanked the commission and supporters. "Thank you all," he said.
The commission discussed a planned transition of duties to Clay Phillips, who has been cross-trained by Dahlke and will take on engineering responsibilities. Phillips provided a projects update during the meeting, reporting on paving crews, arena pad work and access work for the Wolf Creek debris-removal project. Commissioners noted Phillips’s experience and urged him to continue applying for grants and managing federal requirements.
