Lubbock ISD launches committee to study dual language models, plans recommendation for spring

Misty Rieber told trustees the district formed a Dual Language Committee charged with studying TEA-approved dual language models and returning a recommendation to the school board in the spring. The committee’s initial meeting established common terminology and includes participants ranging from experts to community members.
Rieber said the committee will begin a deeper study on Oct. 21, reviewing district data and analyzing existing programs to learn what has and hasn’t worked. Site visits to other districts with strong dual language programs are planned to inform long-term implementation and design choices.
She clarified that Ramirez Elementary’s Spanish Immersion program is represented on the committee for transparency but is not part of any proposed changes. Meetings will be held at central office and kept to one hour after school; the district encouraged board members to attend when space permits.
